Importance Of a Balanced Pool

Why Too Much Chlorine Is Dangerous ?

  • Having too much chlorine in your pool water can be dangerous. Exposure to high levels of chlorine can cause lung irritation, skin and eye damage, and provoke asthma. Not only is it bad for your health, but it can be bad for your pool due to the increase in chlorine.
  • High chlorine levels decrease the pH of your pool’s water, making it more acidic. The more acidic the water, the higher the likelihood of corrosion. This corrosion can affect metal piping, equipment, and the surface of your pool (tiles, liners, concrete, etc.). It can also damage pool accessories and anything else that goes into your swimming pool water.

Importance Of a Balanced Pool

  • Your swimming pool can come to immeasurable harm if it contains water with low alkalinity. You risk your pool walls becoming etched, delaminated, or cracked. Some metal surfaces will give way and melt under the corrosive water, which aftereffect is a stained pool wall
  • The TA acts as a buffer, or control, to keep the pH of your water at recommended levels. If the TA is too low (low alkalinity), the pH can fluctuate or “bounce” and this can adversely affect the water chemistry balance and cause other problems with your pool.
  • An alkalinity level that is too high in a swimming pool can lead to problems such as an imbalanced pH level, which contributes to high calcium levels. High calcium levels can cause scaling, cloudy water and clogged filters. Not to mention, itchy skin and irritated eyes for your swimmers!

Importance Of a Balanced Pool

  • Proper pool pH is right in the middle — pool pros recommend that pH be between 7.3 and 7.6 for optimum performance and cleanest water. If the pH gets higher than 7.8, the water is becoming too alkaline. When water is too alkaline, it reduces the effectiveness of the chlorine — the pool chemical that kills pathogens
  • Low pH causes pool liners to become brittle and crack. It also causes discomfort for swimmers like burning eyes and itchy skins. In most cases, low pH levels are caused by natural factors like a heavy rainstorm, overuse, and improper use of chemicals.

Importance Of a Balanced Pool

  • What happens when CYA in a pool is too high? – CYA Levels exceeding a threshold of 70 parts-per-millions of cyanuric acid can reduce the effectiveness of the chlorine in a pool. The amount of time it takes to kill bacteria lengthens as the concentration of CYA increases. The ideal level for CYA is 30-100 ppm
  • It gets rather difficult to keep chlorine in the pool when CYA is below 30, as CYA acts like a sunblock. The lower CYA goes the worse that gets. At low CYA levels you are wasting chlorine and risking getting algae, so it is much better to not let the CYA level get too low.
